Become a Rowan Master Gardener

The Extension Master GardenerSM Association of Rowan County educates those with an interest and enthusiasm for horticulture, providing basic training in a broad range of horticultural topics. In return, participants dedicate volunteer time working in our greenhouse, demonstration gardens, and school gardens. Our members assist with varied community gardens and gardening programs, teaching community residents horticultural best practices based on research and recommendations. Candidates must be 18 years old or older.

Within one year of completing basic training, volunteers are expected to give at least 40 hours of volunteer time to help Rowan County Cooperative Extension Services better serve the home gardening audience. Volunteer hours are earned in any number of ways: working in the gardens or greenhouse, planning and executing the annual plant sale, writing newsletters, planning day trips, and providing hands-on aid or answers to home gardening questions to civic organizations, schools, community beautification projects, and other community gardening programs.

The Rowan County Extension Master Gardener Program provides excellent training, fellowship with others who have an enthusiasm for gardening, and an opportunity to share research-based horticulture knowledge with other community members. The Master Gardener School is held every other year, and students are certified upon meeting the volunteer hour requirements. Educational hours and service to the community are required for annual recertification.
